The Florida GOP on Sunday began the process of removing Chair Christian Ziegler amid a sexual assault allegation, with the party’s executive board voting during an emergency meeting to censure the chair, strip his authority, and reduce his salary to $1.
The board also voted to hold a meeting of the party’s full governing body on Jan. 8 in Tallahassee, when a vote is expected to remove him.
“We asked him to resign immediately; he has still not resigned,” Florida GOP Vice Chair Evan Power said, adding, “So we wait. We’re calling a special meeting … to elect a new chairman and remove him formally from office.”
On Sunday, December 17, the Republican Party of Florida suspended Chairman Christian Ziegler and demanded his resignation during an emergency meeting, adding to calls by Gov. Ron DeSantis and other top officials for him to step down as police investigate a rape accusation against him.
CNN Reports, Ziegler will no longer be able to hire or fire staff; speak on behalf of the Florida GOP; or raise funds for the party, though he retains his title as chairman.
The GOP leadership, which voted 39-0, decided not to conduct a special investigation into Ziegler.
